How to watch YouTube on Tesla: Theater, browser and vvid compared

To watch YouTube on a Tesla, open YouTube in Tesla Theater, go to youtube.com in the Tesla browser, use a fullscreen website, or open vvid.tv in the browser and play YouTube links you saved on your phone. None of these need an app install. Theater needs Wi-Fi or Premium Connectivity, and every browser option needs the car to be online.

Option 1: Tesla Theater

Theater is Tesla's built-in video app. Tap the app launcher, open Theater, and choose YouTube.

Theater needs Wi-Fi or Premium Connectivity. See the Tesla Owner's Manual for details. Which apps appear in Theater varies by region and vehicle.

Theater is the simplest choice if you just want to open YouTube and browse. It is less convenient if you want a list of videos lined up in advance.

Option 2: The Tesla browser

You can also go to youtube.com in the Tesla browser and play videos there.

Why videos stall or fail

Owners regularly report that YouTube in the browser behaves differently from Theater: videos can pause, buffer, or refuse to go fullscreen, and the experience can change between software updates (r/TeslaLounge discussion). If playback keeps stalling, check your connection first. A weak cellular signal can cause it.

Option 3: Fullscreen websites

Some websites open YouTube inside a page that fills the whole Tesla screen, which gets rid of the browser bar. Examples include testube.app and fullscreentesla.com; a community list on GitHub collects more. These are third-party tools, so how well they work depends on the site and on your car's software version. Tesla's 2026.26 browser update also added fullscreen video for supported streaming sites on the front screen (Not a Tesla App).

Option 4: vvid

vvid is a web app that runs in the Tesla browser. You save YouTube, Bilibili or Douyin links to your library on your phone or computer, then sign in with the same account in the car and play them there. There is nothing to install.

Add links on your phone, play them in the car

  1. Copy the link: On YouTube, tap Share under the video and choose Copy link.
  2. Sign in to vvid on your phone: Open vvid.tv on your phone and sign in with your email. vvid sends you a verification code, so there's no password.
  3. Add it to your library: Tap + at the top right, paste the link and tap Add.
  4. Open it in the car: Type vvid.tv into the Tesla browser, sign in with the same email, open your library and tap a video. Bookmark the page for next time.

The step-by-step tutorial shows each tap.

Playlist import for paid members

Paid members can import a whole YouTube or Bilibili playlist instead of adding videos one by one: copy the playlist link and add it the same way. The Free plan saves up to 20 individual links.

Ready in advance

vvid gets the videos you save ready ahead of time, so they start right away instead of buffering. This works on the Free plan too.

Fullscreen and hotspot

vvid plays fullscreen on the car screen, and it works when the car is connected to your phone's hotspot.

Plans

vvid has a Free plan with 1.5 hours of watch time a month, videos up to 2 hours long and up to 20 saved links, with ads. Paid plans start at $2.66 USD a month billed annually ($31.88 a year), or $3.99 USD billed monthly. See current plans for details. In-car synced lyrics are free for a limited time on every plan.

Some videos can't be played: for example, ones that are private, deleted, region- or age-restricted, or DRM-protected. The Tesla video guide covers the full setup and limits.

Can I watch YouTube in the Tesla browser?

Yes. You can open youtube.com in the Tesla browser, or open vvid.tv and play YouTube videos you saved to your vvid library on your phone. vvid runs in the browser with nothing to install, plays fullscreen, and starts saved videos right away because they're prepared in advance.

How do I make YouTube fullscreen on a Tesla?

In Tesla Theater, the YouTube app already fills the screen. In the browser, vvid has a fullscreen button on its player that works in the car. Tesla's 2026.26 browser update also added fullscreen video for supported streaming sites on the front screen.

Do I need Premium Connectivity to watch YouTube on a Tesla?

Theater needs Wi-Fi or Premium Connectivity. vvid and other browser options also need the car to be online. With vvid, Wi-Fi, Premium Connectivity or your phone's hotspot all work.

Can I play my YouTube playlist on a Tesla?

Paid vvid members can import a YouTube playlist on their phone, then open vvid.tv in the car and play it from their library.

Can I watch Bilibili or Douyin on a Tesla?

Yes, through the browser. The North American Tesla Theater has neither, but you can add Bilibili or Douyin links to vvid on your phone and play them in the car.

Do I need to install anything?

No. Theater is built in, and vvid runs in the Tesla browser.

Why does YouTube keep stalling in my Tesla browser?

Usually because of the connection. Moving to better signal or using Wi-Fi helps. vvid gets saved videos ready in advance so they start right away.
